I read the entire book, but I didn't understand what really went on at the end when James suddenly "shuts down," and Eubank and the others walk him out. What happened to him?

When he was forced to confront the fact that his life and desires could lead only to self immolation (suicide), Taggart appears to have become catatonic. When faced with evil from an external force, one can counterattack, retreat, or surrender. When faced with evil from oneself, none of those responses make sense. One either completely reverses one's course, embraces the evil, or shuts down (Taggart's choice)
