Perhaps a better question is: Can one be consistent with the requirements of altruism and live?
They are not compatible. To be an altruistic businessman would be an act of moral suicide. Look at the Twentieth Century Motor Company in Atlas Shrugged. When under new management, the company decided to pay its employees according to their needs, not their merit or hours put in. Not long after, all the employees turned against each other, embittered by the idea that what one man "earns" is really being taken from someone else. This event marked the beginning of John Galt's mission to stop the motor of the world. In conclusion, to be altruistic you must abandon your principles. Wanna do that?
